(JCB) Chapter 2

Food is a necessity in the daily lives of human beings all over the world. However, the different foods eaten in different parts of the world have significant impacts on society. Nowadays, there are stereotypes of the various types of food each culture has but the differences are not necessarily taken into consideration when we see culture as a whole. Generic ideas of different foods from different cultures typically blind what the culture is really about. For example, as a Latina I grew up eating Mexican food of all different sorts but when I look towards the American society, they refer basic tacos, beans, and rice to Mexican food. This misconception is made largely in almost every culture. Us as humans try to find a way to normalize what we see but don’t know about. Therefore, when we see something we enjoy and can appreciate we connect certain aspects of it to what we are not knowledgeable about. While this strategy can be useful and satisfactory, many people judge other culture’s foods because they don’t know what it is and their solution is to judge and laugh. Most people don’t seem to connect how every individual has their own meaning of normal and the social structures set have made it harder to focus on working to come to realize the distinct cultures especially in food. Along with ignorance of culture, there comes a lack of connection as to where food comes in and how we are supplied. When going to a restaurant, little thought goes to the process of how your dinner is being made or how it can to be on the earth. we see food as a normal necessity that most people don’t question. However, when taken out of the normal expectations, questions are raised about certain foods because it’s not what is socially acceptable. Food has become something that’s judged greatly because of ones individual values and normality.
