(H) Miner, Body Ritual Among the Nacirema

The Nacirema people look to their healing magical experts to seek relief and cures. However, from the perspective of a person with insurance and doctor care, the methods used by these people seem useless and exploitative. The dragging process of going to an all knowing man that sends you with a cryptic prescription to obtain magical and obscure materials seems a bit too dramatic. Then again, my normal is different from that of the Nacirema people. Nevertheless, from what was observed, it did not seem as though the procedures made gave any positive effects or progress for the different cases. It seems as if society stated that that was how their health system was going to be with no questions asked. There is no doubt or unsatisfactory results from what is done in the painful procedures. Those who come in for their torture procedures and see no results continue to return in blind hopes that one out of the many attempts will cure them. The standards society has set for them are to endure what is given to them and trust in what the magical procedures bring them. This social structure is based greatly on ignorance that the problem is how they continue to put blind faith in torturous and gruesome ineffective methods. However, as an outsider looking in, their social demands and normalities are different than what I’ve grown accustom to. Although the methods might seem useless and inefficient in my eyes, they provide comfort for those who trust in them and continue to hope for a cure.
